Letter to the National Public

Dear Editor,
I’ve always wanted to join a club on campus, but the school didn’t have much I was interested in. I figured taking out the time to start one wouldn’t be so bad and found some great people to create XPRES (Xhibiting Passion Represents Everyone’s Skillz) with. The club is about showing your talents and broadcasting some form of a talent show all year long. Even though this is a fun event for everyone to get involved with, I’m afraid that people will miss the seriousness of this club.
My peers and I have been vigorously working on proposals for this club, finding charity groups, working in the community, and giving kids something to do other than having an “idle mind.” It can prevent them from unnecessary violence and trouble because they’ll be doing something they enjoy.  There are many things this club can contribute to in changing our community and bringing people together through music, writing, dancing, acting and much more. We have a community full of talented people and getting people involved outside of the University of Memphis is a long term goal that we are determined to meet.
This club isn’t about promoting yourself through your talent or receiving individual proceeds for your success. We want to be able to give back to our community and help those who are in need. We can create a foundation for St. Jude because there are so many sick children there with parents that doubt that’ll see another day. Being able to give to St. Jude and visit so we could give them a show can change that child for the rest of their life. Those proceeds that we give can be what the doctors need to find that cure for the cancer that child is suffering with. The joy of being able to contribute to something as joyous as that is lifetime of happiness for us and that family.
We want to bring people together again, when things were peaceful and everyone can gather to see a few teenagers singing in groups, listening to the heart-throbbing poetry, and understanding the story the dancer tells in his/her moves. This will be a fun group, full of energy and excitement. But we must always remember that it’s not about us. It’s about the people around us, our community.
Sincerely,
dork
